I Not So Sure How I Feel About Venom, And Here’s Why
Although the very talented Tom Hardy is cast in the titular role, I have my doubts about the Venom movie. The reasons are various. Some are related to the film’s production. Others are due to the film’s screenplay.
I have three major concerns.
Sony
Like everyone, I was very excited when Sony brokered a deal with Disney to bring Spider-Man to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). However, that same excitement has been extinguished. Why? Because Venom will not be a part of the MCU. Given the unmatched critical and commercial success that Disney’s Marvel movies have had and the fact that Sony’s most recent Marvel films have not had (e.g. Spider-Man 3 and The Amazing Spider-Man 2), I;m not geeked by the prospects of a Sony-led production.
Will It Be Rotten?
For better or for worse, Rotten Tomatoes (RT) is often a key indicator on whether a major movie release will be a success or a failure. I, for one, check it out a lot if I am on the fence about a movie. Enter Venom, which I am on the fence about. When I checked RT today (9/29/2018), I noticed that a “No Score Yet” designation is listed. With the release date (10/5) less than a week away, this smells like a “Rotten embargo.” As a comic book movie fan, I sincerely hope it is not.
The Trailers
I did not like the first official Venom trailer because it contained very little venom. 🐍 However, trailer #2 is much better. I must admit, it has given me a glimmer of hope.
In The End
I have significant concerns with Venom. However, the second trailer and Tom Hardy provide two rays of light for a potentially dubious production. The truth will be told in less than a week. Get your popcorn ready! 🍿
