In what was a relatively light year in terms of comic book movie content on the big screen, what was the best superhero movie of the year?
Before I tell you which one was the best release, here are the only real candidates to me:
- The Fantastic Four: First Steps
- Superman
- Thunderbolts*
The “big three” superhero flicks of the past year all have a strong case for being the “winner.” But when push comes to shove, I choose one.
The Final Verdict
- Thunderbolts 🥇
- The Fantastic Four: First Steps 🥈
- Superman 🥉
Why Thunderbolts? ⚡️
All of the aforementioned movies are excellent and worth watching in the movie theater. However, Thunderbolts is the best overall to me, and to others.
It’s unique combination of prime (2008-2018) MCU-style fun as well as its delving into mental health issues through the character Sentry make it stand out most.
Functionally, this is an Avengers film. It just doesn’t include the familiar cast of characters from the 2012 film or any members of the official team that Falcon/Captain America has recently been charged to organize by, ironically, “Thunderbolt” Ross in Captain America: Brave New World.
I’m stoked to see how this “competing Avengers teams” issue gets addressed/resolved in Avengers: Doomsday and beyond.
