The three reasons that I am excited about the movie Deadpool are:
1. “Practice makes perfect.”
It’s been tough schlepping for Ryan Reynolds in the superhero movie business. In 2004, he co-starred as the wisecracking, vampire-slayer Hannibal King in the highly-disappointing Blade Trinity, which signaled the end of the highly-successful Blade movie franchise for now at least.
In 2009, he depicted another smart a_s character–the one and only Wade Wilson/Weapon X, in another “not-so-Marvel-ous” box office bomb!
And lastly, and most disturbingly, he headlined the disaster that was Green Lantern, one of the worst comic book movies ever. A wise person once said that, “we learn more from our failures than from our successes.” I am cautiously optimistic that this will be the case with Ryan Reynold’s latest pet project.
2. “Art imitates life.”
It is pretty obvious that Wade Wilson aka Deadpool is a role that Ryan Reynolds was almost born to play. Don’t let my harsh words above fool you, I like Ryan Reynolds, but mainly as a comedic actor. And this character is about as comedic and inappropriate (hence the R-rating) as you can get. And that is right up Reynolds’ alley. Think Van Wilder on steroids!
3. Tim Miller.
Although he’s a neophyte filmmaker, directing his first (full) feature film, Miller has been nominated for an Academy Award for a short film, directed the opening sequence in Thor: The Dark World, and is a comic book addict who’s read over 400 comic books in a single month.
What’s not to like about that?
I’m optimistic that he’ll handle the source material with a deft touch.
In the end, I could be wrong, and Ryan Reynolds could live down to his tepid comic book movie roles.
However, I am optimistic that this will not the case with Deadpool. For his career’s sake as well as geeks’ hopes worldwide, I truly hope that I’m right.
