It has not been smooth sailing for the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). From critical bombs to polarizing fan reaction, it’s been a tough go for the DCEU, especially compared to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). However, all of this will not stop me from seeing Wonder Woman, on opening weekend no less!
I count at least five reasons why Wonder Woman is must-see cinema, for me at least:
- “Girl Power.” I have two daughters. They like superheroes. The symmetry is quite obvious. No matter how the movie is turns out, the imagery alone will be hella-powerful for them as growing young women.
- Patty Jenkins. Jenkins’ critically-acclaimed, directorial debut Monster was an excellent movie. However, after her promising big screen debut, Jenkins has primarily directed for the small screen. I’m excited to see her back directing a major cinematic release.
- The Trailer. Although it reminds me a great deal of Captain America: The First Avenger, with it’s World World II backdrop and titular character’s romance with a military person, the trailer suggests this will be the best DCEU film to-date. Despite Warner Brothers’ “no jokes policy,” the trailer carries a serious tone but does not ignore the fact that a little fun is OK too!
- Lynda Carter. By referring to Miss Carter, I am dating myself. But who cares! Very few guys my age are ashamed of saying that they not only liked the now, mad cheesy Wonder Woman television series, but also had a celebrity crush on the aforementioned. Like Christopher Reeve did for Superman, Lynda Carter helped generate casual fan interest in Wonder Woman.
- Stand-Alone. Like Man of Steel (2013) before it, I really like the fact that Wonder Woman seems to stand on its own, without an obvious tie-in to the larger extended universe (i.e. Justice League). I’ve always felt that the DCEU plan seemed rushed. It was as if they were pumping out movies as quickly as possible to set up the Justice League movie event. That has proven to be a flawed approach. My hope is that Wonder Woman, whose events happen before those in Batman v Superman, Suicide Squad et al, is a step in the right direction.
In closing, my thoughts and prayers go out to Zack Snyder and his family on their recent loss.

I am of mixed feelings. Here introduction in the “meh” Batman v. Superman left a rather sour taste in my mouth – but I guess that is down to my overall impressions of the film in general (LOL).
In addition there is my often mentioned superhero fatigue. Heck I still have not seen GOTG 2.
On the plus side, this is a female-centric story ad it will be kinda cool to see what impact that has on the storytelling.
So yeah – still on the fence.

Were it not for my littles, my sentiments would be exactly the same as yours “ILC!” 🙂 At this point, it looks like I will be telling you how it is. 🙂 Regarding Alien: CoverYorEyesInIt…I’ll leave it at that.

Lynda Carter was originally the reason why I was hating on the concept of this movie. I didn’t think they could find someone to do her performance justice even if it was a cheesy show. But the new wonder woman has really made her mark in the Batman vs Superman movie. I would argue she stole the show. I quickly changed my biased against her after seeing her performance. She’s made wonder woman her own and I imagine that will continue in the new movie. The whole girl power thing is another reason I want my daughter to see it as well. Let’s hope the trailers reflect a great movie.

I agree 💯. Taking the littles to Alamo Draft House to see it. 😊
