Let’s cut to the chase, I’m here to talk about Suicide Squad and the 10 things that I am most looking forward to seeing in the film. Read it and geek (out)!
10. Who the hell is the Enchantress? Sounds a lot like Scarlet Witch to me. Or a character out of a Disney tale. I’m “guilty-as-charged” as a non-comic book fanatic, so I’m interested in finding out more about this unknown (to me at least) character and her enchanting powers.
9. Killer Croc: The actor who plays him had a dual role in Thor: The Dark World as Algrim the Strong/The Cursed. In this film, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje gets to play another CGI-enhanced badass. I read a little bit about his character in the comics. I hear he actually bites people. I’m interested in how that whole biting thing will play out on-screen (or not).
8. Viola Davis: Simply put, Davis is one of the most underrated actors in Hollywood. I’m especially excited to watch her depiction of Amanda Waller — one of the more conniving, yet complex comic book characters that you will find.
7. Will Smith’s Deadshot: The (former) Fresh Prince is a polarizing figure. Some people have grown tired of he/his progenies’ overexposure. While others (like me), have generally enjoyed his films, especially the sci-fi ones not named After Earth. Due to his considerable fantasy/sci-fi acting chops (Hancock, I Am Legend, Independence Day, I Robot and the Men in Black trilogy), I’m confident he will kill (pun intended) as a super-assassin here.
6. David Ayer (director): I’m an Ayer film. Of his directing and writing credits, Training Day (producer/writer) and Fury (director/producer/writer) stand out. This will be his first foray into “superhero-ville” but I think he’ll do just fine. His films are dark. This film is dark. If heaven were gloomy, this would be a match made for it.
5. The Justice League: We already know that The Dark Knight makes an appearance. But what other surprises does Warner Brothers have in store? Will we see Superman? Wonder Woman? Or any other super-team member?
4. DCCU, also known as the D.C. Cinematic Universe: I am very interested in how this film ties into the Batman vs. Superman film as well as the upcoming Justice League (2017). As a movie geek who leans Marvel, I’m very interested in seeing how this film compares in action, humor and wit to the Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.
3. Harley Quinn: For me, she was always an ancillary character in the imaginary world of Gotham that is dominated by the Harvey Dents, Selena Kyles, Jack Napiers, and Bruce Waynes. However, after witnessing her bizarre quips and one-liners in the Suicide Squad teaser, I must say that my interest is definitely piqued.
2. Batman’s Cameo: How can this not get you hyped?
1. Jared Leto’s Joker: From the gold/silver fronts to the seemingly endless tattoos, this is by far, one of the most unique depictions of the Joker. He who wears the crown as the clown prince of Gotham carries a very heavy burden. We all know what Jack Nicholson and the late, great Heath Ledger brought to the role. I’m really looking forward to seeing what Leto brings to the character.
I hope you are as excited about this movie as I am. In less than a month, we’ll find out if our expectations are met, exceeded or crashed.
