Which five superheroes most represent Memorial Day 🇺🇸?
#1 Captain America
This is the easiest one to rank. America is literally in his name! Steve Rogers not only is a beacon of service and protection of the U.S., but he is also tasked with leading the Avengers to protect the entire planet.
He is truly the “Star-Spangled man with a plan.”
#2 Superman
The son of Jor-El is not from earth (he’s from Krypton actually) but he’s often been depicted as the most American of superheroes in print as well as on the large and small screens.
The 1978 movie proudly proclaims that Superman stands for truth, Justice and the American way. Can you get any more patriotic than that?
#3 The Falcon
Sam Wilson’s character has had many iterations, but his most popular depiction is the former para-rescue, Air Force alumnus. He proudly dons a jetpack and mechanical wings in defense of the country and the world at-large.
The military bond between he and Steve Rogers, and to a lesser extent Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier, is unmatched.
#4 War Machine
Lt. James “Rhodey” Rhodes, like Sam Wilson above, is as U.S. military man as one can get. He’s still an active member of the Air Force in most comic book/media depictions.
Whether being portrayed deftly by Terrence Howard or more sarcastically by Don Cheadle on the big screen, he’s been a steady Avengers member and confidant of number five on my list.
#5 Iron Man
Surprised that he’s on the list? Not a hard selection for me. His father Howard Stark is one of the greatest military scientists/inventors in comic book lore. And Tony Stark has continued this legacy through the state-of-the-art weapons and tech that the U.S. military purchases.
And of course, how can we forget his armory of suits? They are not government issue, but they damn sure protect us all.
