With Halloween 🎃 around the corner, I am having scary thoughts. They are about Doctor Doom. Not because I don’t like the character. Quite the contrary—this side of the Green Goblin, he is my favorite Marvel supervillain. 🦹♂️
Not MY Doctor Doom
My concern is with the casting choice of Robert Downey, Jr. as Doctor Doom in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday.
I know “RDJ” is the most impactful actor in the MCU. And I know that despite recently well-reviewed films like FantasticFour: First Steps and Thunderbolts dropping this past year, Marvel Studios has struggled a bit at the box office for various reasons.
However, I don’t think this is the right elixir to solve what currently ails the franchise. And I’m also disappointed that we’re not getting a fresh, new actor depicting such a seminal villain like Doom.
I hope that I am wrong. And I hope that Robert Downey proves me wrong. But it’s gonna be hard to disassociate him from, “I am Iron Man.”
We shall see.
Editor’s Note: Rest in power to Julian McMahon, who gave an earnest attempt as Doctor Doom Tim Story’s Fantastic Four films (Fox Studios).
