Despite its tepid Rotten Tomatoes score 66%), by MCU standards, I love Thor 🔨: Love ❤️ and Thunder ⚡️.
Thor is his usually hilarious self. His sidekick Korg is his comrade in (comic) arms. Thor’s enchanted weapons—Mjonir and Stormbreaker, are their own characters too. In addition to insane screaming goats, Taika Watiti has an uncanny way of making non-human characters extremely human (and funny).
Lady Thor is both heroic and funny. It is nice to see Natalie Portman back flexing her acting chops as well as her biceps. She chews up scenery.
Zeus is hysterical. Russell Crowe is a parody of his Gladiator character.
Christian Bale is Christian Bale. As the big baddie, he’s both haunting and tragic, which is hard to pull off. You realize he’s horrible but you feel bad for him too.
Trust me, the film isn’t without its faults. For many (not me), the jokes may feel forced and overstuffed at times. And Gor the God Butcher, although a menacing character, could have used more screen time.
But none of the aforementioned issues above are enough to spoil the fun that I had watching it. With Thor Ragnarok as it’s backdrop, I went in expecting silly fun. And I got it, plus more emotional scenes than I would have expected.
If you haven’t seen it, enjoy the ride, especially the mid-credits scenes.
