It’s funny. Several years ago I was a Punisher 💀 hater. During my formative years, I had a definitive preference for superheroes that could fly, wore capes and masks, or had superpowers.
This preference started to evolve as live action comic book adaptations like the Dark Knight trilogy and Marvel’s Defenders came to life on the big and small screens 📺. The latter content, especially Daredevil and The Punisher, really began to pique my interest.
Maybe it’s because I’m older or maybe it’s because I’m tired of standard superhero alter egos and their superhero better halves dominating the genre, but the realism of street-level heroes has me geeked as of late.
Enter Frank Castle 💥
Firstly, I’m a huge fan of Jon Bernthal. I would say he’s one of the most underrated character actors in Hollywood. But then I thought a bit harder—he’s no longer underrated. He’s not the most physically-imposing Frank Castle but he does an excellent job portraying his world-weary, cynical and purposefully violent ways.
Secondly, I’m very curious to see how this special presentation plays into the larger MCU. It’s no secret that the Punisher has a role in the upcoming Spider-Man movie, so it’ll be interesting to see how he plays against Peter Parker. Additionally, does this mean that more Defenders are on their way to the big screen?
We’ll see! 👀
