Happy Mother’s Day 2016 to all of the mothers, grandmothers, great grandmothers, etc. around the world. Without them, there are no mortals, mutants or superheroes. In celebration of latter, I want to have a little bit of fun on this “maternal holiday.”
I present you with my unofficial list of the top three mothers in comic book movie history.
- Frigga in Thor: The Dark World. One of the few key heroic characters to be killed on screen, the wife of Odin, mother of Thor, and the queen of Asgard sits in the top spot. Not only did she teach the deceitful Loki his magic, she was also pretty nifty with a sword. Shoot, she almost vanquished Malekith, the leader of the Dark Elves, before being sneak attacked by the formidable Cursed!
- Lara in the Man of Steel (MOS). Just being the mother of the world’s most famous superhero should be enough to land her the number one spot. Although Frigga gets the slight nod based on the hand-to-hand combat skills that she displayed in “Dark World,” the wife of Jor-El and mother of Kal-El was no less courageous in MOS. Not only did she show her maternal instincts in protecting her son from the murderous General Zod, she stayed behind while Krypton was disintegrating, and died with honor. It doesn’t get much more “gangsta” than that.
- Agent Peggy Carter in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. This is kind of a trick pick. We all know how “tough-as-nails” Carter was in Captain America: The First Avenger. But in that film, she was young, single and childless. However, by the time of the Winter Soldier she is an aging, presumably widowed grandmother, nearly 70 years after the events of the First Avenger. Before she had offspring, she was a top agent in S.H.I.E.L.D.. And after she had offspring, she continued to battle “Father Time” and Alzheimer’s. Her heroism has truly stood the test of time.
I’d also like to give a special shout-out to Spider-Man’s Aunt May, who despite not being his biological mother, gets props for her brave, scrappy “battle” with Doctor Octopus in Spider-Man 2. Perhaps Spidey’s fighting acumen runs in the family.
I hope you enjoyed the list and enjoy spending time with any of the mothers in your life!
