There are five main reasons that I am #geeked to see Captain America: Civil War. Let’s get straight to it.
Reason #1: Captain America: The Winter Soldier
While I truly believe that the Dark Knight is the best film in comic book movie history, The Winter Soldier is my personal favorite.
I’m a huge fan of “realistic” superhero movies, and few were as grounded as the aforementioned film. It played like a political action thriller (a genre that I truly enjoy), and judging by the Civil War trailers, so will the sequel.
Reason #2: The Russo Brothers
The brains behind Reason #1 are able directors who delicately balance a keen respect for the source comic book material while also incorporating elements of classical Hollywood cinematic structure. They’ve earned my trust with The Winter Soldier movie.
When they were initially hired to helm the Captain America sequel, I will admit that I was a bit skeptical. Their resume primarily included television shows. But Kevin Feige and his creative crew at Marvel Entertainment have often gone low profile/unconventional in their directorial selections – this being one of them. And it’s worked like gang busters!
Reason #3: Black Panther
Chadwick Boseman, who will be playing the King of Wakanda aka T’Challa, is an excellent actor (if you haven’t done so, go see 42 and Get on Up). Ryan Coogler is an excellent young director (if you haven’t done so, go see Fruitvale Station and Creed), which makes me even more hyped to see how T’Challa fits into this conflict while setting up Coogler’s stand-alone Black Panther film slated for 2018.
And man, is this not the best superhero costume that you have ever seen?
Reason #4: Spider-Man
As Iron Man famously introduced him in the phenomenal second trailer, “Underoos” is the most-anticipated superhero to enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) to-date! Spidey’s rights were owned by Sony up until recently, but now he is free to duke it out with his MCU siblings! And for that, we are all very thankful.
The unexpected casting of Tom Holland is something to watch – as this depiction of “your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man” will be more youthful than it’s ever been on the big screen. I am all for new looks in a genre that has inevitably become a bit formulaic over the past several years.
Reason #5: And this! Need I say more?
Get ya’ popcorn ready folks!!
