Captain Marvel Is Coming

February 27, 2019 By Ja Dawes

Captain Marvel is on the way. Are you ready? I am! I purchased my opening night tickets at the local Alamo Draft House nearly a month ago.

Why I Am So Hyped

MCU Movie Sabbatical
It’s been six long months since the last Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) release, Ant-Man and the Wasp, back in July 2018. I’ve still received my comic book movie fix by way of Sony’s Venom and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse, and DC’s Aquaman during the last half of last year.

Venom is a messy yet riot of a film. Aquaman is solid but unspectacular entertainment. And “Spider-Verse” is simply amazing. Coming off the scintillating Avengers: Infinity War and the surprisingly good Ant-Man sequel, I am confident that Captain Marvel will bridge the gap that those two films laid the groundwork for.

Brie Larson’s MCU Debut
I regret to say that I have not seen many Brie Larson movies with the exception of the popcorn flick Kong: Skull Island, in which she ironically co-stars alongside her fellow Captain Marvel co-star Samuel L. Jackson.
I still need to watch Room, the acclaimed film that Larson is most known for in dramatic circles. She’s clearly a well-respected actor, and Marvel’s Kevin Feige is clearly showing (see the Doctor Strange and Black Panther casting) that he’ll spare no Disney resource when it comes to putting Oscar-level talent in MCU films.

The Skrulls
I love comic book movies but I am not an avid comic book fan. Thankfully for me, my younger brother is! He’s schooled me on the Skrulls, and their backstory is interesting to say the least. Apparently, they’ve been hiding in plain sight among humans for years.

To top things off, they have also been warring for years with an alien group that most Marvel moviegoers got familiar with in Guardians of the Galaxy –the Kree. It’ll be very interesting to see if they are portrayed as allies of S.H.I.E.L.D., enemies of S.H.I.E.L.D., or something in between.

And last but not least…The Return of Agent Coulson!
Is he dead? Definitely. Maybe. But he’s alive-and-kicking in Captain Marvel since the movie is set in the 1990’s. Every Marvel movie fan was happy to see one of the MCU’s most popular characters return to the small screen on ABC’s Agents of Shield. And his “return” here is a sight for sore eyes on the big screen.

The Verdict
Based on all of the factors I highlighted above, Captain Marvel-ous I figure this movie to be.
